Grape Agate is relatively new to the gemstone industry as it was only introduced in 2016. It was found in the Mamuju area of the Western Sulawesi Coast in Indonesia and is only mined in a very small area. Thus, it is quite rare and hard to come by.

Even though it is called Grape Agate, it is not actually an agate, but a botryoidal purple chalcedony. Botryoidal refers to the tiny sphere shaped crystals that have naturally formed together, giving it’s ‘grape like’ appearance. 

The crystals are formed in small voids left inside volcanic rock (called andesite pillow lava). Grape Agate can be white, purple or green depending on the deposit.
